SAN DIEGO -- The USC Trojan from Huntington Beach beat the UCLA Bruin from Newport Beach. Ian Kennedy outpitched Gerrit Cole, combining with two relievers on a four-hitter, and the San Diego Padres beat the NL Central-leading Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1 Wednesday to avoid a three-game sweep. "Thats a classic matchup. A Bruin and a Trojan," said Padres manager Bud Black, whose father attended USC. "I liked the outcome. I liked the result. They both threw well. Theyre both fine young pitchers. You can see where he was the No. 1 pick. Its the first time weve seen him, obviously. Hes got a good arm." Cole pitched at UCLA before the Pirates made him the first pick overall in the June 2011 draft. Kennedy, a first-round draft pick of the New York Yankees in 2006, is five years older than Cole, so he never played against him in college. "UCLA wasnt very good when I was there," Kennedy said. "Theyre very good now. Ill give them that. It was a rivalry just because it was UCLA. We beat up on them pretty good." Kennedy gave Cole his props. "He is a No. 1 pick overall, and he throws a lot harder." Yonder Alonso drove in both runs for the Padres. The Pirates lead in the NL Central was reduced to one game over the St. Louis Cardinals, who beat Milwaukee 8-6. Kennedy (5-9) won for the second time in four starts since being obtained from the NL West-rival Arizona Diamondbacks on July 31. He held Pittsburgh to four hits, struck out eight and walked three. In his previous start, Kennedy allowed three home runs in 4 2-3 innings in a 5-2 loss to the New York Mets on Friday. Luke Gregerson pitched the eighth, walking Felix Pie and allowing Andrew McCutcheons sacrifice fly, and Huston Street worked the ninth for his 24th save in 25 chances. The Pirates lead in the NL Central was reduced to one game over the St. Louis Cardinals, who beat Milwaukee 8-6. Kennedy got into and out of trouble in the first, when the Pirates had two singles and two walks in the first inning, and didnt score. Pie, who was promoted from Triple-A Indianapolis earlier Wednesday, beat out an infield single before being thrown out trying to steal second. With two outs, McCutcheon singled and Pedro Alvarez and Russell Martin walked to load the bases. Kennedy got out of the jam by striking out Garrett Jones. "I thought Ian, after the first inning, settled in and really threw the ball well," Black said. Before striking out Jones, Kennedy said he was "trying to throw the strikeout pitch rather than having them put it into play weakly and see what happens." Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Kennedys changeup was "filthy." "His fastball command came around about the second inning," Hurdle said. "He was tough to square up. The changeup made the fastball look so much better for him. Hes throwing 91 (mph) and its coming in after that changeup looking way hotter than that." Alonsos sacrifice fly in the third brought in Will Venable, who hit a leadoff double and advanced on Chris Denorfias groundout. In the fifth, Alonso singled in Denorfia, who singled with two outs and stole second. "I just felt like I let a pretty good opportunity slip away because we had an opportunity to come in here and sweep and set the tone for the San Francisco series," Cole said. "I was just disappointed that I wasnt better able to help the team." Said manager Clint Hurdle: "There were some balls up. He pitched out of the stretch most of the time. I think he competed very, very well. He had a good outing." Cole (6-6) allowed two runs and 10 hits in six innings, struck out five and walked none. NOTES: It was the first time a former USC pitcher beat a former UCLA pitcher since Seattles Randy Johnson beat Tim Leary of the New York Yankees on May 17, 1991. ... To make room for Pie, the Pirates optioned RHP Ryan Reid to Triple A. To make room on the 40-man roster for Pie, Wandy Ramirez was transferred to the 60-day disabled list. ... The Pirates open a four-game series at San Francisco on Thursday night, when LHP Jeff Locke (9-4, 2.90 ERA) is scheduled to start against RHP Matt Cain (8-8, 4.35). ... The Padres are off Thursday before opening a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs. RHP Edinson Volquez (9-10, 5.72 ERA) is scheduled to start opposite RHP Edwin Jackson (7-13, 4.89). Jerome Bettis Jersey . "Canada," Bolland said with a smile. "Is that a question?" One day earlier, though, fellow Toronto Maple Leafs centre Nazem Kadri wasnt so sure his home and native land could pull off the win against the United States in the semi-finals of the Olympic hockey tournament. Troy Polamalu Jersey . Theres little time for rest, too. The Flyers and Rangers play again Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden. Simmonds scored in the first period and twice more in the second for his first career post-season hat trick. Mason survived a busy first period and stopping 31 straight shots until Carl Hagelin scored late in the third. http://www.steelerspronfl.com/Youth-Fra ... te-Jersey/. Jeff Carter had two goals and an assist as the Kings stretched their streak to seven wins in a row with a 4-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday. David DeCastro Jersey . They are back to a game above .500 on the year and back to .500 on the road. It was their 10th extra time game of the year, and only the second one that did not got to a shootout. Mike Wagner Jersey . “The shootout, theres nothing wrong with it, I think its an exciting part of the game but its just one small aspect,” said Chicago Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman. “Its a skill exhibition. If you can get it back closer to regular hockey and have it decided that way; that would be my preference.” “I dont think its a knock on the shootout, I think more of the managers would like to see it end in overtime,” added Washington Capitals GM George McPhee.SEATTLE -- Chris Young and Robinson Cano arrived in Seattle with fanfare at opposite ends of the spectrum. Seattle couldnt celebrate the arrival of Cano enough. Young was a last-second addition plucked at the end of spring training. Each has proven invaluable in keeping Seattle at .500 at the 50-game mark of the season. Young pitched shutout ball until Albert Pujols homered in the seventh inning, Cano had three hits and two RBIs to raise his average to .332, and the Mariners beat the Los Angeles Angels 5-1 on Monday. While the production from Cano was expected after he signed a $240 million contract to join the Mariners, what Young has contributed is a surprise, especially with Seattle down two expected starters in the rotation. "I was trying to find the adjectives to describe this guy today, but what a godsend hes been for this rotation," Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon said. "Hes been tremendous. In and out, up and down, he never wavers and knows what he wants to do." Young (4-2) kept the Angels without a hit until Kole Calhouns single with one out in the sixth inning. An inning later, Pujols hit his 506th career home run, pulling within three of Gary Sheffield for 24th on baseballs all-time homer list. Young lasted only two more batters after Pujols homer, getting pulled after issuing a walk to Raul Ibanez. He struck out five and walked three. But Youngs strong pitching at Safeco Field continued. In four starts at home this season, Young is 2-0 with a 1.65 ERA. It was a solid rebound for Young, who got knocked around in losing his previous two starts. He gave up 10 hits and five runs in losing to Minnesota and allowed four runs and seven hits in a loss to Texas last week. In Youngs last seven starts for Seattle, the Mariners are 5-2. Its an impressive turnaround considering Young spent all of last season out of the majors after shoulder surgery. "When youre oout there competing, you expect to win.dddddddddddd I wouldnt take the ball if I didnt expect to go out and compete and win," Young said. "To say its surprising, after all the hard work and time rehabbing I put in I would say no." After McClendon lamented Seattles production following losses over the weekend to Houston, the Mariners responded with five runs in the first two innings off Tyler Skaggs (4-2). Seattle scored three unearned runs with two outs in the second. The top three hitters in Seattles order did the damage against Skaggs. James Jones scored twice, and Michael Saunders tripled, singled and scored two runs. Cano singled in each of his first three at-bats a day after his streak of reaching base ended at 31 games. "Thats just part of the game sometimes where you take advantage of a pitch over the plate," Cano said. "Sometimes there are games where they throw you that same pitch and you foul it off. ... We took advantage and thats what we want. Those are the little things you want to do." Skaggs wasnt helped by his defence in the second inning when shortstop Erick Aybar couldnt handle Jones one-hopper with two outs. The miscue allowed Dustin Ackley to score and opened the door for two more runs on Saunders triple and Canos infield single. Despite the early trouble, Skaggs threw seven innings and struck out eight. "Tyler understood keeping us in the game," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "He made pitches, got on a great streak and pitched seven innings. But the damage was done early." NOTES: Angels dropped to 1-5 vs. Seattle this season. ... Seattle LHP James Paxton (back) said he was not sure when his next throwing session would be after making his first rehab start at Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday. ... Seattle RHP Taijuan Walker (shoulder) is scheduled to make his first rehab start on Wednesday at Tacoma.
